Wissenschaftlich is often translated as 'scientific'. But in German the word is not as narrow in meaning as has generally become the case with 'scientific' in English and can simply mean 'a systematic body of knowledge' (cf. Wahrig, Deutsches Wörterbuch: 'geordnetes, folgerichtig aufgebautes, zusammenhängended Gebiet von Erkenntnissen'). In this sense wissenschaftlich can be translated as 'systematic'. Depending on the context, wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis, for example, can be translated as 'scientific knowledge' (where the meaning is clearly intended), but also, in a wider sense, as 'systematic knowledge'.
